Q: Reglan: New FDA Blackbox Warnings. Have a question?

You may have heard that the Food and Drug Admin (FDA) placed new warnings on Reglan, a motility medication that is sometimes used to treat infants and children with GERD. Is your infant or child currently on Reglan? Need more info? Post your question or concern here and I will try to address your concerns.

I will post a Sharepost with more detailed information too.

My daughter is currently taking metoclopramide and has been taking it since Feb 4, 2009.  She was dx with acid reflux with she was 4 weeks old.  She has had an upper GI and everything (anatomically was fine) as well as an ultrasound to rule out pyloric stenosis. The dosage has recently increased from .5 to .7 mls every 8 hours.  She is also on Zantac .7 mls every 8 hours.  My question is:  Is this dosage to high for a 3 month old?  What should I be looking for in regards to side effects.  I have noticed the tongue thrusting, but don't know if it is because of the medication or if it a baby thing.  I would like to ween her off this medication, but don't know if that is a good idea. Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you,

Concerned Mommy

Mary, It is best to call the doctor who prescribed the Reglan for advice. If the doctor wants you to stop taking Reglan, you will need to stop the medication gradually to avoid an increase in side effects. At the same time, the doctor may want to give you a different medication to replace the Reglan.

The doctor may need to examine you to see your symptoms. Certainly the Reglan may be causing side effects but other medical conditions can cause similar symptoms.

What side effects are you noticing? How long have you been on the Reglan?

Best wishes,
Jan

Definitely take your baby off this Medication!! My daughter began taking it at age 5 months for acid reflux, and by age 7 months she began showing signs of rapid eye blinking, leg movements, facial grimacing, etc. We thought it was seizures..........we took her to so many Dr's and had many test done to try and find out what was wrong. She is now 3 years old and she has been diagnosed with Tardive Dyskinesia (neurological disorder) by her neurologist due to the Reglan and she will have this for life!! We deal with so much pain everyday watching her with her repetitive leg movements and it breaks our hearts! If we had know this was a side effect!! WE WOULD HAVE NEVER GIVEN THIS TO HER! If you read about it it says "NOT RECOMMENDED FOR A CHILD UNDER THE AGE OF 18 YEARS OLD"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLease..............talk to your Dr. about this and read about it......it is very dangerous!

My son has had Acid Reflux since birth pretty much. He was put on Zantac at two weeks old and taken off at 4 monts. Put back on at 6 months and the dosage increased. It has not helped. He constantly has stuff coming out his nose (spit up) projectile vomit. His doctor called him in reglan today and i am concerned. My boyfriends sister is a nurse practioner and says its great for infants. Everyone says had i rather him be sick vomiting all the time than take the medication. I know it sounds bad but i feel like that medicine is a bad idea. Do you konw of anything to suggest to the doctor that is safer and may help. Thank You

Hello Shelly,

So sorry you are dealing with reflux and vomiting for 6 long months. In addition to medication, common treatments for reflux include a special diet (formula or breastmilk with a modified diet), positioning (keeping upright after a feeding, sleeping on an elevated surface such as a wedge). Often eating smaller meals and making sure there is a good seal on the bottle or breast will decrease the ingestion of air. This may decrease the spit up and vomiting somewhat. Some doctors recommend thickening the feeds to decrease vomiting. He might be old enough to begins solids. Often having solids before a bottle or having solids and then waiting and having a bottle a hour or more later will also aid digestion.

I am not sure if you have tried any of these treatments. Let me know if you need more information.
