Q: PREVACID VIA GASTROSTOMY TUBE WITH CONTINUOUS TUBE FEEDING-SPECIAL ADM INSTRUCTIONS

I HAVE SEEN AND HEARD MANY DIFFERENT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ADMINISTERING PREVACID VIA G-TUBE WHEN CONTINUOUSLY TUBE FED. WHAT ARE THE MOST ACCURATE INSTRUCTIONS? IS THE TUBE FEEDING TURNED OFF BEFORE OR AFTER MED ADM? IS APPLE JUICE/JUICE NECESSARY WITH GLUCERNA FORMULA AND A DIABETIC PATIENT? ANY CLARIFICATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS, KRISTIN SHAW RN

Hello Kristin,

I always call the manufacturer for directions. The Prevacid customer service is excellent and you should be able to find out the specific recommendations.

My daughter had a feeding tube while on Prevacid a while back and the beads got stuck in the tubing no matter what I did. I know some parents had the medication compounded into a liquid. Now there is a solutab that can be dissolved into a small amount of water and then administered in a medication syringe.

Prevacid and all PPI's are to be given 30 minutes before a meal on an empty stomach. Not sure how to handle a continuous feed.

I hope others will share their experiences too.
