Q: I have severe acid reflux

I have recently had a upper GI series that revealed I have a very small hyedel hernia. Doesn't sound like much but believe me it causes me alot of grief. I have on several occasions awaken in the early morning to acid coming up into my throat and spilling over into my windpipe, being as I also have a COPD this makes it even more difficult to breathe. But I have made an observation it seems only to happen after I have either eaten ice cream or drank a glass of milk. could it be that I later in life I have

become lactose intolerant, My doctor advised me to take two Prilosec instead of one which I do but it still happens

It is completely possible that as you have gotten older you have become lactose intolerant. It's also possible that the fat content is triggering problems. You are on the right track trying to keep track of your diet to see how it affects your reflux. You may want to try keeping a food & symptom log for a few days or weeks. A food log can really help you figure out what caused problems when. I think the hardest part of a food log is remembering to fill it out and not changing your diet. We all tend to think more about every bite when we are writing it down.
