Q: I am in GERDIBS pain, pills no longer working totally, please help!!!

In 2002 I was diagnosed with GERD/IBS which I take 1 prilosec 20mg a day for. Three weeks ago I had a sinus/ear infection. My doc gave me cipro and erythromycin (both brought on bad stomach problems, even with eating yogurt).

Since stopping the antibiotics, I get acid reflux breakthrough and IBS-D and C. I'm back on Prevacid 30mg (for 7 days now, but it is not working), what could have brought it back. I hardly eat at all for the last week, I'm still crampy and bloated with acid reflux. No vomitting, no bloody stools, just very uncomfortable bowels and heat feeling in my back at times.

Hello!

It is common for an illness to cause a worsening of GERD for days or weeks after. When my children are sick, the GI doctor often recommends increasing the reflux medication. Ask your doctor if this would help you. In addition, the pediatrician recommends taking probiotics (many brands) for a few weeks to a month after using antibiotics.

Check this out with the doctor before changing your treatment plan.

Thank you soo very much, you have eased my mind. I'm already taking 30mg of Prevacid, but I may add in some Pepsid for a time until this passes. I tried eating yogurt, that didnt help as a matter of fact it made me a little sick. I wonder if I may need to try something else. I've lost a bit of weight with this flare up, which is good I am very overweight. So when I can go back to eating yogurt, I am going to do it...again THANK YOU
