Q: Is pain in the back associated with acid reflux and other symptoms of it?

My fiancee had acid reflux when she was pregnant over 3 years ago.  Tonight she says she has severe symptoms of acid reflux such as a burning sensation in the throat, but also pain in the back and pain associated with deep breathing.  The two latter symptoms seem more isolated to the right side of her body.  Is this acid reflux, or something else?  She takes doryx before bed every night which was prescribed by her dermatologist 2 months ago--maybe this has something to do with it.

Thank you for your help,

Riley

Your fiancee's symptoms are similar to mine when my reflux is really flaring. I often need to take simethicone (Gas-X) when things get bad in addition to the reflux medicaitons I take.

As for the anti-biotics - they can really throw our systems off. The pharmacology paperwork for Doryx does list chest pain as a possible side effect. But, taking anti-biotics can also mess with the beneficial bacteria that is present in our gut. She should discuss her symptoms with the prescribing doctor as well as the benefits that she's gotten. Maybe there is a better medication? Or maybe she needs something in addition to the Doryx to help with the GI symptoms. Or possibly the two are completely unrelated. Her dermatologist probably prescribes this medication often and will be able to tell you if this is something she sees commonly or not.

Stephanie,

Thanks for your helpful reply.  The simethicone is a good idea and we'll be talking to her dermatologist tomorrow to see if the medication is aggravating her symptoms.

Thanks!
