Researchers say that sleep problems may be the only sign of acid reflux for some older patients who often don't experience heartburn. Doctors at an American Geriatrics Society meeting say that aging makes the throat less sensitive to pain, so older people may not have heartburn even though they have acid reflux. This makes gastroesophageal reflux disease harder to diagnose quickly and can result in more damage to the throat.
