Could bacteria cause GERD?

New research has found that people who suffer from acid reflux and Barrett's esophagus have different bacteria in their throats than healthy people. In the small study at New York University, scientists found that 82 percent of the bacteria in healthy people's throats was Streptococcus. But most of the bacteria in the throats of people who had esophageal disease were bacteria normally found in the stomach.
