A new study by Italian researchers has found that children who took proton-pump inhibitors and histamine-2 receptor antagonists to control their gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) symptoms had a higher risk of developing community-acquired pneumonia and acute gastroenteritis than children who did not take the drugs. Researchers suggest that decreasing stomach acid output with GERD medicines may be the cause for the increased risk.
