According to a Consumer Reports analysis, the over-the-counter (OTC) antacid Prilosec may provide the same benefits as some prescription drugs--and at one-tenth the cost. Analysts say that because Prilosec is a proton-pump inhibitor like Nexium, Protonix, and Prevacid, it works in much the same way. But some experts point out that for patients with insurance, a prescription co-pay may still be cheaper than paying for the OTC medication.
