Chewing gum may speed bowel recovery

Abdominal surgeries, and particularly surgery on the colon, can slow down or halt bowel function, but new research suggests that chewing a piece of gum may help. British researchers say that a group of bowel surgery patients who chewed sugarless gum three times per day after surgery spent less time in the hospital and achieved normal bowel function more quickly than those who did not chew gum. Experts say the secret appears to be that the act of chewing stimulates nerves in the digestive system. Read more »
