Hot drinks may increase esophageal cancer risk

Drinking tea and other beverages at very hot temperatures may increase the risk of squamous cell esophageal cancer, researchers report. The study, conducted in a province of Iran where people drank only water or hot tea, found that those who drank their tea at temperatures higher than 158 degrees were eight-times more likely to develop esophageal cancer. The risk of cancer was double for those who drank it hot—above 156 degrees—when compared to those who drank their tea below 149 degrees. The study’s authors say it is the temperature of the drink that raises the risk, not the chemicals in tea itself.
