Rebound reflux from some meds may cause dependence

Rebound acid reflux caused from the use of popular proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) reflux meds may cause medication dependence, researchers say. A study in Denmark found that 44 percent of healthy volunteers who started with no symptoms of reflux developed significant symptoms after being on Nexium for two months. Experts say it may be that the body compensates for the lower level of acid by producing more, which can aggravate symptoms. The study's authors say the rebound effect may lead to dependency on antacids.
