Sleeping pills may worsen acid reflux

People who have acid reflux--particularly nighttime reflux--may want to avoid sleeping aids, researchers say. In a recent study, scientists found that patients who took Ambien were half as likely to wake up when their acid reflux symptoms started when compared to patients who didn't take a sleeping pill. Experts say the study suggests that patients who have nighttime GERD should be aware that taking a sleeping aid may increase their risk for acid exposure during the night, which could increase the risk of Barrett's esophagus.
