Protonix may up pneumonia risk

The popular acid reducer Protonix may triple the risk of pneumonia in hospital patients, a new study has found. Researchers in North Carolina analyzed the charts of 834 cardiothoracic surgery patients who were given either Zantac or Protonix to prevent stress ulcers. They found that patients given Protonix were three times more likely to develop hospital-acquired pneumonia than patients given Zantac. Experts say that hospital-acquired pneumonia is a leading cause of infection-related death in critically ill patients, and it can prolong hospital stays and the costs associated with those stays.  Read full story >
