Long-term use of heartburn drug linked to brain disorder

One reader of The People's Pharmacy says that the long-term use of the heartburn drug Reglan led her friend to develop tardive dyskinesia. According to pharmacologists Joe and Terry Graedon, the risk of this neurological disorder was added as a black box warning to Reglan's label in February 2009. They point out that Reglan is not intended for long-term use, and they say the disorder can cause repetitive motion of the extremeties, lip smacking, grimacing, tongue protrusion, rapid eye movements, or puckering and pursing of the lips. There is no way to reverse the disorder and little is known about how to treat it, they point out.
