Surgery, Medication Both Imperfect Cures for Reflux

Surgery and medication are viable options for long-term acid reflux sufferers, but experts say neither treatment is perfect. In a 12-year study, researchers found that 53 percent of patients who had surgery remained in remission from heartburn symptoms, while 45 percent of those on Prilosec were in remission. However, surgery patients had improvements in GERD and regurgitation, while those on medication showed improvement in swallowing, flatulence, and an inability to belch or vomit.
