No Link Between Heartburn Drugs and Birth Defects: Study

Women who took proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs during pregnancy do not appear to have babies with a higher rate of birth defects, a new study has found. A large Danish study found the medications' use during pregnancy was "reassuring" to women who need the meds to control symptoms of acid reflux. Still, experts say that all pregnant women should medication exposure if at all possible, and they suggest that women attempt to control symptoms using locally-acting medications rather than PPIs as a first option.
