Vyvanse: The Devils drug now for ADHD... Please read my story of only 6 months on it.

By Richieboy0383 Saturday, August 27, 2011
NO!!!! I was on vyvanse started at 20 then 30mg for 4 1/2 months and it made me VERY speedy, shaky, but but at like the middle of the 5 th month I had to do Something. By the way I was on 40 mg by now and on 3mg Xanax Xr 2x a day cuz the Vyvanse was making me paranoid. But I was getting A's and B's still well concentrated to the point where I would come him and studying in the beginning of Vyvanse was great! But as my dose increased so did my symptoms for example I was the biggest bitch by 4 months on V that I lost friends like I had not like a whole lot but at month 2 I was irritable and that's when I started to have huge fights with a couple month 2 and some of my friends were a bit fuller figured and one day I was real bad that I told a friend that shes 2 fat and her clothes were 5 sizes 2 small. She gained 55 lbs on methadone clinic methadone. So mth 4 1 wknd I didn't take it cuz I was researching V by now and it was a 3 day wknd and from fri at 6 pm I fell asleep pretty much till tues AM!! That rest of the week I skipped school I was having hellish thoughts like suicide. (I never felt suicidal ever!) I couldn't stop crying I was so low on energy, enormously depressed. The Xanax just made me more of all the above. Then that Fri I saw my psychiatrist told her I wasn't sleeping eating maybe a grand a day a super bitch with no cut down filter, canker sores in my mouth which hurt so much!!! Body aches as well. (this was month 5 btw) she raised it to 40 mg pretty much didn't listen to me. 3 days on 40mg and was in the Psych ward cuz I told her I was gonna kill myself. In the hospital they took me from 40 to 10mg in 3 days. Then the 4 days of hell came back in psych. I didn't do nothing but sleep for 3 out of that 4 days and day 4 it was the worst day of my life!! I went to jail for a week for a DUI in '07 and Id rather of spent that week again then those 24 hrs on day 4 off of Vyvanse. V took me to places in my mind that if I had to go on Vyvanse again, um id rather not say on here. My advice is that no 2 bodies are similar but I've learned that this is common with any stimulant drug. But Vyvanse is 100% the same. It's methamphetamine based.

Thank you for sharing your story with us. You are right, no two people are the same, and everyone reacts differently to medications. There are many people who find stimulant medication to bevery helpful in reducing symptoms of ADHD. But for some, stimulants increase nervousness, agitation and anxiety. It seems you had this type of reaction.

You're not alone! My 16 year old son started on 50mg of Vyvanse and 3 hours after his first dose he had a killer headache, stomach ache, and his legs hurt him so bad he could hardly walk.  I gave him two more doses the next two days and by the end of the third day he was  having migraines and couldn't hardly move because he had body pain from head to toe.  After doing some research, I took him off the Vyvanse myself because the doctor still wasn't convinced that his problems were related to the medication.  Fortunately he only had three doses but he still has all of the physical symptoms after a week off of the Vyvanse.  After three visits to his doctor, their office won't even see him now because they say they can't do any more for him. I've had him to the emergency room but they don't know what to do either.  If anyone else has had the severe headaches and wide-spread body pain, how long does it take to resolve itself?  It's almost like he has the symptoms of an overdose but they've lasted a week now.  I know the Vyvanse doesn't stay in your body that long.  Help, please!

Thank you for your reply. I am so sorry that you are going through such a hard time and hope that your son is feeling better. This must be hard for him, not knowing when this will end. I have looked for information to help you but most of the information I read indicated that these symptoms usually disappear after about 48 hours. In your son's case this hasn't happened. Did your doctor say how long he expected this reaction to last? Is there something he can give your son to relieve some of his pain?

Please post again and let me know how your son is doing.

Thank you for the response!  He has seen numerous doctors now; most of them have no idea what is even causing his symptoms let alone how to treat them.  Most will not even admit that the Vyvanse was the initial cause.  After days of researching the topic myself, I found information that linked the Vyvanse with his symptoms; which appear to be from a Vyvanse overdose.

Since my son is an athlete who has a weight-lifting class first period at school in addition to his normal activities he is at an increased risk of rhabdomyolysis at normal doses.  He was started on a 50mg dose which is against the suggested starting dose for patients being switched to Vyvanse from another stimulant medication; he should have been given 20mg or 30mg instead.  After taking the first dose, he went to weight lifting and started having some of the symptoms of rhabdomyolysis; however, at that time I was not aware that it could occur at normal dosing.  He even saw his doctor the next day and was told his pain was from depression, not the Vyvanse.  I took him to his doctor's office two more times and to the ER and his CPK's were never checked to rule out overdose and/or rhabdomyolysis; it was never even mentioned.  They drew blood on three separate visits but never checked for that until I finally requested it a few days ago; by then it was within normal limits.

At this point, his regular doctor won't even make an appointment to see him because they say there is nothing they can do for him; I had to take him back to the ER again to get a doctor to finally check his CPK.  I really think the only reason they checked it this time was because I printed every article I could find along with the Vyvanse package insert that showed any evidence of a possibility of a Vyvanse overdose and/or rhabdomyolysis at normal dosing.  I also printed patient's testimonials that have had or are still having the same issues that my son is having.  One patient in particular stated that he experienced pain after taking Vyvanse and it took six months for the symptoms to resolve.  Needless to say I didn't find that very comforting.

At this point and time my son is still experiencing migraines, head-to-toe body pain, and fatigue and gets almost no relief from NSAID's or Tylenol so he suffers daily.  His doctor won't see him and one other doctor told us it was psychological!  I actually thought doctors/medicine had progressed farther than that; if they can't explain it then they either hide or say it must be psychological, right?!? Undecided How discouraging!

Thank you again for support though.

You might want to consider finding a different doctor, one who is willing to go the extra mile and work with you to find both the cause and a solution to what your son is going through. How awful for both him and you (and your entire family). It is so difficult to watch your child in pain and not be able to do anything about it.

Thank goodness he has you!

Keep posting and letting me know how he (and you) are doing. I will be thinking of you.

I have bipolar disorder and ADHD.  I am currently on 900mg lithium, 40 mg propanalol, 7.5 immovane and 50 of Vyvanse.  I started on a low dose of Vyvanse, and was up to 70 mg.  My Dr is supposed to be weening me off of it beacuse I don't like taking it.  I am now on 50mg and was supposed to lower it 2 months ago but my Psychiatrist is impossible to get into.  I see her in a few days thank God.  I have developed a SEVERE problem chewing the inside of my mouth, to the point of bleeding.  I bite my lip all the time, it drives me insane.  I have a tic that won't go away.  Also I find since I have been on this medication I have trouble typing, I type everything as if I were dyslexic.  I am also have problems with my memory.  The reason I am on this perticular madication is up to 6 years ago I had a drug problem and I was abusing other ADHD meds she put me on.  Now I want to stop this pill TODAY!!! I think it would not be smart for me.  For me I would not recommend this medication, it turns me into a not nice person.
