Q of the Week: Do You Modify Your Child's Diet to Help Reduce ADHD Symptoms?

By Eileen Bailey, Health Guide Tuesday, March 16, 2010
We have posted about ADHD and diet and more recently the gluten free diet . While some parents strongly believe that diet has a large impact on behavioral issues, others dismiss these claims.   My question this week:   Do you modify your child's diet to help reduce ADHD symptoms? &nbs...

Although the science behind the effects of diet on ADHD is inconsistent and often non-commital on the subject, I myself notice for my personal experience a big difference in my own and my childrens ADHD due to the effects of diet.

ADHD is a situational disorder and as such can be impacted negativley by lack of sleep, low energy, environment, mood etc, as such it is all the more susceptible to the positive boost that can be given by eating the right foods.

So for me watching what we eat is an easy way to manage the severity of my own and my childrens symptoms on a dialy basis

Thanks for your response. I do believe that eating right/exercise and getting a good night's sleep can help. At the very least, it improves our mood and helps us to better cope not only with  symptoms of ADHD but with the many obstacles that life may throw at us.

I am an adult with ADHD. Diagnosed at age 50. Both daughter have condition, but neither diagnosed until in college, one before me, one later, so never had an opportunity to try special diet.
