When Dad Has ADHD

By Eileen Bailey, Health Guide Tuesday, June 22, 2010
Any parent of a child with ADHD will tell you daily life has its ups and downs. Living with hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention can be frustrating and exhausting. Add to the mix that one of the parents probably has ADHD as well. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, there is a ...

I am a dad with ADHD and my daughter is on one of the not so effective meds.  It beats nothing, but not by much.  One of my online doctors advised me to read the book, "A Remarkabke Medicine has Been Overlooked", by Jack Dreyfus.  I went to alibris.com and found a used copy.  After reading it, I took it to my doctor who agreed to give me Phenytoin or PHT, the common name of Dylantin.  He told me it would have to be off lable as the drug s primarily indicated for seizure control.  When I told him of a trial in a group of prisoners who got 100 mg. twice a day, in which there was a near miraculous turn-around.  I am now in my second week of treatment and I could not be more pleased.  My sister gave her son Dylantin for nearly 10 years for seizures an asked if I was getting any benefit from it.  My 15 yr-old  Jennifer broke in and said, "I'll say he is getting a benefit, why he has not yelled at me even once since he has been on it."  I am

going back for a one month review and if he is through with the book I am taking it to my daughter's doctor.  I just wish I had found out about this years sooner.

I hope this info helps others the way tht "Thank God" it has helped me and my family.

Thanks so much for sharing your story with us. I know some members have posted information about using anti-seizure medications to treat ADHD and have had some success. You are one more. I am glad you have found something to help.

Please keep us posted on how you are doing. I would love to hear updates.

I could not be more pleased with the results I am getting from the Phenytoin 100 mg. 2x daily dosage I am taking.  If I miss a dose, they can tell the difference.  The biggest  difference I can see is that the rage that was building up from all the mental activity, is now gone.  I feel totally at peace with this medication and I urge you to talk with your doctor if you suffer from Adult ADHD.  The book "A Remarkable Medicine Has Been Overlooked", by Jack Dreyfus is a great resource to use in talking with your doctor.  It can be found at a site I use a lot.  The site is alibris.com.  I hope this has been a blessing.

Yours in Him,

Brother alan...Jesus is the Reverend".

Kids don't always understand when their parents act like the dad in this article, so getting some ADHD coaching might be the ticket. His kids are liable to have ADHD, too, so by getting the help he needs, he can help his kids, too.

Thanks for your suggestion. Coaching is quite beneficial and certainly this type of behavior can be confusing for the kids.
