Antidepressants are medications used to treat the symptoms of depression and related conditions (such as anxiety). Today, there are four main types of antidepressant medications:
- tricyclic antidepressants
- selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
- monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors, MAOIs)
- tetracyclic compounds and atypical antidepressants
Since individuals respond differently to medications, each person needs to work closely with their physician to determine which medication is best for him or her.
