One of the problems when diagnosing ADHD or bipolar disorder is the similarity of many symptoms. Children with bipolar disorder can act hyperactive, especially during the mania stage of bipolar. They can have difficulty focusing or paying attention. But there are major differences in these two disoders and the effectiveness of treatment is dependent upon an accurate diagnosis.
A recent study may have found a way to differentiate between these two disorders using brain scans. The brain activity was different in those that had ADHD and those that had previously been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
