I am not familiar with the actual post or incident however it is sad that someone who works so hard at helping others is treated this way. A degree does not make someone an expert at anything only through hands-on experience and hard work in real life situations can someone become an expert. Hundreds of doctors mis-diagnose people everyday in our country alone because they have not had an experience with that particular illness or situation. A doctor's degree does not make them a expert either. So to this fellow writer and any other who has been torn by insensitive and cruel people please do not abandon your dream of helping others. Eileen I do believe if others cannot be kind then they should be given a warning or banned from taking part in the site. It is unfortunate however sometimes this is the only way to send a message to others who may be next in line.
Hello Eileen,
First, I read the article you linked to and didn't find anything wrong with it, but there are a few things about writing on the 'net' which tends to get attacked. The perception of writing 'against' medication or writing 'for' medication these two are probably at the top of the list when writing about ADHD. Although the writer is attacked for writing the article as an 'expert' it's probably more about what she was writing than about the fact she is considered or writes as an 'expert'. Still, it's not right to simply attack one's credibility simply because one doesn't agree with someone else.
Second, blogs are mainly about opinion and passing what one has learned or experienced on to others. It's not medical advice, but more so the sharing of one's life lessons learned. Most readers know this and appreciate the content more so than any title someone may have; however, we have to remember we are writing to the World Wide Web and there are so many people out there who will attack for the sake of attacking. There are people who spend all day on the net attacking others for having a different opinion and will use different excuses each time, usually it's because they are 'looking out for others', but really it’s just what they do – the attackers themselves lose credibility over time and not the blog writers who are being attacked.
I wouldn't give too much credit to the commenter or any commenter who attacks the writers or what they write about, because that's the nature of the net, but if it goes below the belt or is primarily insulting then I would simply delete the offending comment.
Bests,
Bryan

Expert encompasses a number of things on HealthCentral: Patient Experts, medical professionals, other healthcare professionals, etc. Regardless of which niche you fall into, personal opinion is always part of the equation. We make it clear that we are not doctors and recommend users see their physicians to discuss information further.
Thank you for addressing this issue publicly.
Thank you for writing this article. Halleluyah!
I am not sure if anyone ever has spelled out what the term means here. And I am so glad you did. Over the past few months it seems that more than several of the writers have gotten some "interesting" responses targeting the whole expert title. As long as I have worked here which was the summer of 2008, I have been advocating for a change in our title. I would never label myself an expert despite my education, career, and personal experiences. I think the term "expert" means something a little different to everyone and therein is the source for some misunderstandings.
It was a hard decision as to whether or not to remove offending comments but I am glad Eileen let them stay. I think it serves as a reminder as to the importance of community and how it works best if we are respectful of each other. It is more than fine to disagree on content but it is not fine to hurl personal insults.
I think one of the commenters was so right...there are hot buttons in every forum or on-line community. Medication is always one for most groups no matter which condition you are talking about. I don't want to stay away from these topics because they might invoke debate. But I am always careful to clarify in any of my articles that this may be research I have cited or that I am talking about my personal opinion or experience. The fascinating part of this for me was...for one post I am labeled as being anti-medication and for another post I am labeled as being a dupe of big pharma. Sometimes as a writer you can't win. I think what sometimes happens is people will choose to rant about a particular topic without having read the actual article...it is just a springboard for spewing an agenda.
Really glad that we are discussing this openly instead of shoving it under the rug. I am greatly hoping that one change which will result from this is a change in our titles.
Thanks again Eileen. I think this was extremely helpful for not only this community but all the individual sites on Health Central. I will be sure to tell the folks on MyDepressionConnection to come over and read this as well.
FYI:
The experts were chosen for our level of recovery, ability to write well about the details of the topics we cover, and our willingness to exert time, effort and research into covering these topics.
We were not people hanging out on a street corner who were approached and given $50 each to move furniture.
For example: I'm reading a 250-page book so that I can be able to write a SharePost on Schizophrenia and Anosognosia.
Would you like to do that?
I'm the expert at SchizophreniaConnection and trust me regardless of what the title is I have the experience, knowledge, skills and writing talent to report on this mental health condition.
I've not only been out of the hospital 19 years, I've been in total remission 19 years. I work two jobs and a third on the side and have done so in these hard economic times.
So I doubt this is an insignificant achievement.
I bill myself as "the community leader and expert blogger" when I tell people I work for SchizophreniaConnection.
I would understand if the title were changed from expert to leader because the fact remains that the experts at the mental health and other Health Central sites were chosen because we are leaders.
Bring on the comments!
All are welcome.
Regards,
Christina
Where to start? I have read Merely Me ever since she began writing for Health Central almost three years ago. I know I have not missed reading one post in that time, on all of the sites she writes for.
She's an exceptional writer and prolific! I could not come up with all the different topics, let alone write articles about them. :) I have never understood how she balances everything in raising a family, home schooling her autistic son, writing and commenting and answering questions every week. There is a lot of everyday struggle hidden behind those words. Only someone who goes through it can see those struggles, often every minute is a crisis, somewhere.
Any personal attack on her, must be carried out by someone who has not bothered to read much of what she has written. She writes about all sides of issues, they are researched and reported over time, and she shares so much of her own disappointments and successes. She always makes the point that these are her experiences, that others might not have the same outcome.
Eileen, I think your point was to support her; I think your post has done that better than, at least I can do. But I offer support and thanks for her work, and for yours. I can remember reading on the Depression site long ago how the title, Expert, made her uncomfortable, and always has. I think it fits.
