Pros and Cons of Using Strattera

By Eileen Bailey, Health Guide Monday, August 29, 2011
If you take medication for ADHD symptoms, chances are you use a stimulant medication such as Adderall, Ritalin or Concerta. These types of medication are effective in reducing hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention but for many people, these medications are not an option. Side effects, such as in...

Thanks for your comment. The text is on the second page. When I looked at the post in Mozilla Firefox, the 2nd page text was moved way down the page and I needed to scroll down to find it. Not sure why this happened. I did open the page up in Google Chrome and both the 1st and 2nd page look fine.

I will let the site producer know about this glitch. Thanks for letting me know.

I usually don't have many side effects from any type of medications, and have tried several ADHD meds with no problems, but Strattera made me sleepy and nauseous every time I took it. I stuck with it for a couple of weeks after the doctor recommended that I keep taking it since the side effects should subside shortly after being on it. I still felt awful just about every time I took it - like I had the flu or a hangover. I've stuck with Adderall or Vyvanse since then.

I am glad that you found something that works for you. I have had a number of people tell me that Strattera did not work well for them and they had trouble with the side effects, so you are not alone. On the other hand, others have said they felt fine on it. All depends on the person, medication really is such an individual treatment.

Intuniv is another non-stimulant medication for ADHD.  My son has ADHD and Tourette Syndrome, so he cannot take stimulants.  Intuniv works pretty well for him, with few side effects.  He took Stratterra briefly in the past.  It had some effect, but not as much as Intuniv.

Thanks for letting us know about your experiences. I think it always helps to hear from those taking the medication as far as what works and what doesn't, even though each person reacts to medication differently. How is your son doing?
