Snoring, Sleep Disturbances and ADHD

By Eileen Bailey, Health Guide Monday, September 17, 2012
We all know what happens when a child misses a nap, stays up late or just doesn’t get a good night’s sleep. The next day he is irritable and probably gets into trouble more than on days when he did sleep well the night before. Even as a teen or adult, without the proper sleep you feel slu...

First, Apnea is searious. Some kids die! Why are researchers stuck at the

corealation between a well nights sleep for a child and class room preformance.

when its obvious? The real question is about obstructed apnea, but more how to

detect it. I watched an episode of 60 minutes, and the big question they posed

to the veiwer, "Does your Child Snore ? " and i could hear him, they were

descibing mylife and my child. Sleep apnea affected Sam from birth to eight.

Little things that seemed at first glance unrelated.

Drooling and little warts on his neck at two years of age, slow and easy, and

sleepy boy little boy till six, he liked school, made friends, but it wiped him right

out. And then his teeth. Saliva and oversized tonsils do not support  good

dental heath. Sam needed four root canels (punishment for brushing three times

a day I suppose) Poor guy. Bed wetting became a regualr thing at our house for

just over a year. (every night, talc, dry pajamas, water proof sheets) and the

yes the snoring! WHAM "Does your child snore?"

Well yeah he did, but it wasnt the snoring, that was wreaking his life it was just

a syptom of Apnea. like the warts, the root canels, and the bed wetting.

So if this sound like your kid, get him some help. Talk to your Doctor.

Tonsilectomy ! it changed Sam's life.

Thanks so much for sharing your story. I am glad that you found the help you needed for your son. I would not have put together warts and bed wetting with sleep apnea. How is he doing now?

I am curious, does your son have ADHD? When was he diagnosed? Did you see a change in behaviors before and after the tonsilectomy?

Hello Eileen, Thanks for reading and replying to my post. To answer Sam was tested and labled ADHD, I know he had all the characteristics, but the testers were WRONG. After the 60 minutes episode, about apnea and snoring, I went right to my doctor, and going over Sams history we were able to establish a co-relation between obstructed sleep apnea (oversized tonsils)  and the warts (excessive drooling and oversized tonsils) the four root canels on a eight year old who brushes three times a day (thanks some more saliva and over sized tonsils) and bed wetting. You will probably never hear a parent say something like "i so glad you wet the bed every night kid" , but truthfully, Sammy's year of bed wetting kept him alive, because when it occured he would wake up and breathe.
(oversized tonsils obstructing his airway had the potential to literaly kill him in his sleep, we have smart bodies and Sams bed wetting was his own in house alarm)
You mentioned that you never would have made a connection between all these little symptoms, warts and bedwetting, and I think thats true for lots of families, and due to the lack of public awareness, its wrecking a peice of thier lives. Since his tonsilectomy Sam is thriving, at school and everywhere.
