Thanks Eileen for letting us know about this new author.

I followed the Roanoke Times link. It included additional information about the author and his mother. They were influenced early on by three authors: Hallowell, Ratey, and another author with whom I'm unfamiliar. I don't normally buy books with titles similar to her book's title - (The Gift of ADHD by Lara Honos-Webb) - because I do not believe ADD is a gift, but, after reading that it gave the family hope after the son was diagnosed at age 5, I now feel compelled to read it too.

ADHD & Me: What I Learned From Lighting Fires at the Dinner Table by Blake E.S. Taylor should be interesting. I've always wondered what it's like to be hyperactive-impulsive boy. And I was delighted to learn that one of the psychology professors at the university that he is attending is considering making it required reading for his students.

My friend's son is similar, bright and extremely impulsive. One day, I had him over at the house to babysit our son, and he activated the "Self Cleaning Oven" feature on our oven because he "didn't know how it worked and was curious". After that incident I decided to have him mow the lawn when I was home instead of babysit.

Today, he's in his mid-20's, working for a contractor on a military base in Iraq, and doing well.

Dropped by Barnes and Nobles on the way home from my nightly walk. They're promoting ADHD and Me, published in 2007. It's on their paperback table near the front door. Hallowell wrote: "Brillliant, funny, totally engaging, and extremely illuminating. This is one of the best memiors of life with ADHD that I've ever read. Simply wonderful!"

They also had The Gift of ADHD in their special needs section. It's newer, published in 2005. Pages 82 - 84 immediately caught my attention: "The Importance of Becoming An Advocate" with the subheading "Starting the Synergistic Cycle", and then following a description of that, "The opposite to the synergistic cycle is the the vicious cycle. The vicious cycle that is set up by being an apologist for your child looks like this: 1. You apologize for your child's behavior after a teacher gives you negative feedback. 2. By accepting the negative feedback, you begin to see your child as essentially flawed...7. The more frustrated you feel, the more difficult it is to feel connected to your child. 8. You and your child both feel a growing distance between the two of you, and you begin to feel helpless and hopeless."

    Sound familiar?

Both books look very interesting. Going to go read now...

eileen, thanks for the sharepost on blake taylor about his book adhd & me what i learned from lighting fires at the dinner table.  i recently go the book from my local library on an inter library loan from another library.  i can't hardly put the book down i really kinda feel that i am going thru some of the same things his mom went thru when he was first diagnosed w/adhd and thru his childhood and teen years.  i see many of the things that she had to deal with are some of the same things that i am dealing w/right now with my own son.  some of the things that blake said he did in the book my son has did them also.  the main thing in the title of this book that made me so interested in the book was the whole title adhd & me, what i learned from lighting fires at the dinner table.  i don't want to exactly put in this comment what my son did but it was dealingf w/fire (no one was injured or burned.  my son did burn a few things but none of it was burned to bad it was very minor what my son burned and nothign caught on fire either).  eileen i can find on your profile the way to write a private message and tell you what my son did, when he did his fire thing.  i have really enjoyed the book i am about half way thru it right now and i have enjoyed every page of it.  is there a way that we are able to email or send a message to blake or his mom, i was just wondering.  well take care - heather
