Many children with ADHD are eligible for accommodations or modifications at school, either through an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) or Section 504, when symptoms of ADHD interfere with a child's ability to learn.

If a student is found to be eligible, a team, comprised of school administration, teachers and parents normally meet to discuss the current abilities and performance of the student, expected progess and possible accommodations or modifications within the classroom. Although students with ADHD are more often found to be eligible under Section 504, the process of determining accommodations and modifications is generally the same. Since each student may have difficulties in different areas, accommodations and modifications should address the individual needs. Although there are a number of accommodations that work well for children with ADHD, these should be specific to the student. During the meeting, the strengths and weaknesses of the student should be addressed and accommodations should reflect specific ways to address weaknesses.

sample IEP can help parents be more prepared for an IEP or Section 504 meeting at the school. This form may be printed out and completed or used to help parents understand what type of information that school will be looking for during the process of determining accommodations.
