Hypersensitivity can occur with any of the senses, even though we most often think of this as a sensitivity to touch (the completely irritating feel of a tag in the back of your shirt). But some people may be highly sensitive to smell, becoming irritated or feeling ill from certain smells. Picky eat...

Hello everyone! I have been following the posts at site for some time. And this week the question of the week caught my attention. I think I need to answer it. Yes, I am hypersensitive. I have hypersensitivities that help me when I am well and bother me when I am not well. I hear all the sounds around me, I see all the movements of cars and people and I read all the signs around me. A water fountain may be the reason I am unable to concentrate on reading or listening to a conversation in a meeting. Within a shopping I mall hear all (yes, all) people talking. I can not have accuracy where it comes from the conversation, but listen to all at the same time. Walking down the street, I come to feel dizzy because my head trying to watch everything at once. I would write a book about my hypersensitivity to be describe all the feelings I have. I already took several antidepressants and none of them helped me, however, they left me in a situation much worse. Currently the Ritalin help me. I do not want to extend, but I leave my testimony. Yes I have Hypersensitivity.

    Great question Eileen!

Yes indeed...my son has many sensitivities...to clothing...to sounds...to food textures...to certain colors (yellow is one) that the world he experiences must be a very different place than it is for most people.

I am finding that now that I have my own neurological issues...due to having MS...I am much more sensitive to certain things like...flashing lights and repetitive sounds.

I think for some folk it is just hard to tune out extra stimulation.

I am hoping others will chime in with their experiences.  I am very curious!

Yes I definately have hypersensitivity to smell, touch, hearing, and spiritually. I am a very picky eater also. There are certain fabrics I can't stand to touch I can't  really explain the feeling it gives me I know it really bothers me. My daughter she had to have a certain kind of sock and it had to fit just so-so or she would have a fit. At the time I didn't know she had ADHD this started when she was little. My socks also have to fit just right too. I just recently found out in the last year that we both were ADHD & Bipolar. I knew I was Bipolar and figured she was too because we both were on anti-depressants but just actually got diagonosed on paper about a year ago. I know the meds have really helped me alot I don't even take an anti-depressant any more just the ADHD med.

When I sleep I can't have my hair touching my face.  Even one strand drives me crazy.

I also can't have anyone touching my food until I'm done with it, nor they can have a "sip" of anything I'm drinking.

My son was diagnosed with ADD when he was 5 (he's 12 now), but even before his diagnoses, he had several sensitivity issues.  He could not tolerate loud noises or bright lights.  I also had to tear out all tags from shirts and pants as they annoyed him tremendously to the point where he could not concentrate on anything but having them removed.  He learned how to use scissors early, which was scary!  He also has sensitivity to certain clothing materials - he can't stand soft or thick materials - and wears short sleeve shirts for as long as he can into the winter - until it gets too cold, then he has to wear the thinner long sleeve shirts.  Refuses to wear sweaters or really thick coats.  Luckily our winter season usually isn't too severe.  And last but not least, he has food issues, but he is getting better at trying new things.
