looking for someone who relates.

By outofcontrol2009 Saturday, November 01, 2008

can anyone my age range relate, im 40 yr old male i was born march 2nd 1968,

i was reading about how todays kids are just out of control . back in the 1970's when i was about 9 yrs old i was placed into a state hospital for 4 yrs  and was diagnosed with what they call today adhd. i was running away from home, getting into all kinds of trouble ,pretty much just being an out of control kid ,back then in public schools you got paddled and then had to sign your name on it, i know today you cant do that or even be placed into a childrens unit at a state hospital unless the kid killed someone.but as i reflect back to when i was about 10 yrs old i did something that pissed one of the doctors off and off i went to be strapped into a bed and held by nurses who kept telling me everything will be fine soon, then it happened! a huge electric shock i felt all over my head and was told this is what happens when kids need to be controled. this probably dont mean much to someone but i thought i need to share this very private thing that happened to me so many years ago.but i just wanted to know if someone my age remembers when judges placed us with add or adhd into stae hospitals, or even got paddled at our school and singed our name into the paddle..

sorry if i just bored someone just need to get this out i guess,,

Hi, I am 43 (born 1965) I went through the same troubles you did as a kid, I was just considered to be a "difficult " child.  I wasnt hospitilized because my parents were too snobby and didnt want any of their friends to know.  Also nobody knew about ADHD then.  I proceeded to cut school, use drugs, and get into alot of trouble.......Continued into adulthood, into violent and abusive relationships, lost jobs, career problems, family problems, you know the story.....  Anyways, long story short, have severe bipolar and ADHD and now I am recieving ECT (shock therapy) monthly.  It has saved my life. I am so sorry you had to experience the "old" way.  The way it is stigmatized.  Because it actually works, and doesnt hurt.  I get put to sleep and dont feel a thing.  I have tried EVERY other option. All the meds, etc...... I take Ritalin, and have ECT.  Its better than takin 5-6 medications and being lost in space all the time.  I would love to discuss this further if you are interested.  Thanks. K

Thank you for sharing this painful memory with us. I am sure it must be difficult for you to think about and I am sorry you went through such a hard time when you were young.

I hope your life has improved. Please let us know what is going on now.
