I found a story of a woman with Autism and she is wonderful please go to youtube and check out her story, it will so inspire you. Her name is Temple Grandin she has a movie about her story and she is a speaker at different places. But I just watched one of her videos and I am just so excited about what I can now do to help my grandson. He is going to be something GREAT !

Thanks so much for sharing this information. I haven't had a chance to look it up on YouTube yet but will make time to do so. I also have a grandson with autism and it is so important to have hope for their future.

For those of you who haven't seen the movie, Temple Grandin, it's on DVD now and is a must see.

Born to an upper middle class family, her mother, a Harvard graduate, was determined to give her daughter a quality education. Temple not only graduated from college, she went on to make significant changes in the cattle industry. I can't say enough about how well the story was told, filmed, and acted. It's an excellent film.

Oh yes we bought the movie as soon as it came to DVD.  It is excellent.  The only thing is...not every person with autism will be like Temple Grandin.  There is a saying...if you have seen one person with autism...you have seen...one person with autism.  Everyone is unique.

Other movies you may enjoy exploring the topic of autism and asperger's syndrome are:

Mozart and the Whale

Autism the Musical

The Black Balloon

Adam

If anyone knows of more...let me know as I do wish to collect them all.  My son who has autism loves watching them too.

Next month is Autism Awareness month...I hope to write about this topic and our experiences.

Thank you so much for spreading the word about this movie!

Totally forgot about the movie Mozart and the Whale. Enjoyed it too.

A while back when I was doing research on asperger's and autism, I found www.wrongplanet.net Great website. Lot's of frank sharing going on there.

Is there no asperger's/autism area here on HealthCentral? That surprises me because there is so much interest and need in this area.

Hey thanks for the link!

Yes that is a wonderful site.  It is all about acceptance and telling it like it is.

You asked, "Why don't we have an autism site?"  Smile

Let me highlight that question:  Why don't we have an autism site on Health Central?

I can tell you that I have been working here since 2008 and I have been pushing for such a site for over three years.  I totally agree with you that we should have one and I don't know why we don't.

In the meantime...I try to write about autism here as it fits in with the site.  I think the reality is that...so many children who have ADHD also have other conditions and disorders.  It is generally not a stand alone condition.  I am betting that many of the parents and grandparents and caretakers who come here to this site...have a child with multiple diagnoses.  Symptoms of ADHD are usually part of autism...so I think we should be talking about this more as there is a real need.

Thanks so much for your shareposts and comments.  Keep on writing and sharing here and let your voice be heard.  I am sorry we don't have an autism site but please do keep visiting us here.

Merely Me,

When I was doing research on asperger's, I stopped looking after I found http://www.wrongplanet.net Are there any discussion forums for autism?

I'm an AD/HD adult. I don't have asperger's or autism. I ask because I do referral work in my job.
