Serious side effects with Vyvanse

By edivine39 Friday, August 26, 2011

This was a personal post sent earlier today, I'm new so I'm still learning how everything works. I just wanted to get part of my story out to everyone. Hopefully this isn't a duplicate.....Thank youLaughing

I have just registered with the site today. I just read your post; I can truly say I know your pain in many ways, emotionally, mentally and definitely physically. In fact, your post came up at face value as I was searching to see if anyone has encountered similar "side effects,” as in my case. I am really praying that you still receive e-mails informing you that you have received a new post. I can relate with you beyond 110%. My story runs deep like yours. Once I started taking Vyvanse, 50 mg once per day, early am; signs started to show within a 6-month period. At that time, I was not aware that Vyvanse was the actual colperate. I started losing weight unintentionally and it was just melting away. Within this 6-month period, I had lost 70 pounds. I had experienced an exceptional amount of odd symptoms as well as deeply covered side effects that occurred ONLY after taking Vyvanse. If I may add, I have taken other meds (the same cocktail) for over 6 yrs prior before Vyvanse. Now, just realizing that the "Cause" is Taking Vyvanse.

We the patients… "Effected" by this medication in such horrific ways! You are not alone.

I would like to reach out and share more with you, NO ONE SHOULD EVER FEEL OR BE ALONE WITH ANY TYPE OF CIRCUMSTANCE….Especially when Doctors avoid, neglect, refuse to treat and OR consider the patient themselves health, when the patient knows their body and asks for a certain care/treatment/test!

I am grateful for my New Pulmonary Specialist insisting on how and why does someone with great health, get COPD? My new Dr. did not find it acceptable to say “OK,” so you have never smoked, you are just going to have to accept that you were dealt “a bad card.” I have been told this repetitively. I was diagnosed at 38 with asthma and then at 39 with COPD…..This mere thought started to put more together for me. Now, I know I have not told you my entire story. I will, I am exhausted right now…..still very ill. This site has given me more hope.

I thank you all who have read this and please post your own stories if you have had any experiences like this no matter how small. Even if you know of someone….medication is, suppose to help improve our quality of life. Not, damage nor kill us….unintentionally. Our physicians need to Hear their patients and respond to their Needs. Were People, Not Guinea Pigs.

Be Well.....

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I am sorry that you have been through such a difficult time and glad that you found a doctor who is willing to find out what caused this as well as how to best help you.

All medications, including aspirin or tylenol, have side effects, although the majority of people tolerate medications well and do not experience side effects and if they do, they are mild. Unfortunately, some people do have more severe side effects, such as those you have experienced. There is no way to know if someone is going to have side effects until they have tried the medication.

You are not alone! My 16 year old son was started on Vyvanse 50mg and within three hours of the first dose began having adverse side effects.  He took two more doses and by the night of the third day he was experiencing some of the side effects listed in the "Overdose" column of the literature.  After a week, two visits to his doctor, and an ER visit, he's still experiencing the same symptoms.  The doctor still isn't convinced it is from the Vyvanse and now they won't even see him because they don't know how to help him.  I am at a loss because I don't know how to help him either.  I will keep researching this horrible drug and reading patient's stories such as yours looking for answers.  Thank you for sharing your experience.  Hopefully, the more people that share, the more careful they will be prescribing this dreadful drug!

I'm sorry you had to experience such side effects.  My daughter was prescribe 40mg of this medication at an very early age.  At the start she experience leg and stomach cramping, glossy eyes, and white lips.  She was not a happy camper, and my husband and I felt like the worst parents in the world to had put our daughter through those sympthoms.  The side effects last about a week and, WOW did we notice a HUGE difference at home and school.  She is still currently using the same medication, but we are now trying to see if we could get her off of it.  Our doctor suggested that we see a therypsit for help before taking her off.  Children's Hospital and her school has been very supportive and now my husband and I are getting extra support (training) to help understand and deal with her daily outcomes.

Good luck to you and hopefully you will (or already) have found a better solution for you.
