I have a seven year old daughter who was just recently diagnosed with adhd and I can completely relate to your experiences relating to meds. It can be quite frightening for both the child and parents. I of course can only speak for our situation, but in my daughters case, we have tried 2 different stimulants and 1 non stimulant adhd med and having gone through all the trial and error, I have come to believe that her body was just kicking it back out. instead of having a calming affect she was "freaking out" so to speak. its almost as if these meds were in our case magnifying the symptoms and making them worse.what works for one doesnt always work for another. god bless, bethany
« Professor Bacevich's Pain is America's Shame | LRC Blog | LRC Home | Senator Sessions Turns 'Hate America' » If you are too different, too energetic, or seem in any way agitated, you will fall under the gaze of the "helping profession." This is a statement by an MD. In fact, the number of kids on mind-altering, psychotropic drugs doubled between 1995 and 2000.
From neorologist Fred Baugman: "ADHD is a means of making paying patients out of normal individuals. And once kids are put on these medications - most of whom never come off them - the pharmaceutical companies have lifetime pain patients. That's what's behind the epidemic."
Null asks the easy question: Why is it that when the baby boomer generation grew up, they weren't taking psychotropic drugs, comitting suicide, shooting up classrooms, and weren't disgnosed with all of these disorders? The answer, of course, is that we are witnessing an unprecedented level of state control over personal behavior. Crises are formulated through scaremongering, and these crises are "solved" by the central planners who are enabled by the federal government through the use of totalitarian decrees. And that, along with the government-pharmaceutical corporatocracy, is creating the lifetime pain patients as mentioned by Dr. Baugman. Null also discusses how this exponential step-up in the drugging of children goes hand-in-hand with the growth of the state's most favored "private" industry - the pharmaceutical industry. As one doctor notes, these "diseases" (ADD and ADHD) all of a sudden appear out of nowhere, and it's oftentimes considered to be "genetic."
As one educational consultant in the video explains, teachers are given nine categories of unacceptable behavior (not sitting still, not focusing, not sharing, and other evil behaviors from young childern with natural energy). If a child demonstrates six of these "behaviors," that child is on the road to having the state diagnose him with ADD. In diagnosing ADD, the main symptom, the main driver of ADD and the need for potent drugs, as considered by the Psychiatric Association manual, is this: "Child often fidgets with hands or feet and squirms in seat." An MD in the video reads this right from the manual.
This video is very long, and it is truly shocking, even for those of us who do already understand what this is all about

While I am sure there is a good amount of over diagnosis and other causes of misbehavior in children than ADHD, to imply that ADHD does not exist is dangerous. I live with a textbook ADHD child, I know it is real and I have seen the damaged self-esteem charachterized by ADHD kids. These scare tactics are irresponsible. ADHD exists, ritalin helps. Teachers need to be better educated and provided better resources to handle the kids and parents need to be better educated as well so they don't just accept a blanket diagnosis or the word of someone they are supposed to trust. Medical insurance should pay for the therapy that is needed to care for these children, not just the medicine. The research is out there to prove combination therapy works, and it's also out there to prove that untreated mental illness has a great social impact, yet insurance pays squat for behavioral therapy but will pay for drugs yet we wonder why drugs are over-prescribed? Fight the right battle.
I am currently learning about all of this with my own 4 year old son. I was informed that a child that is diagnosed with ADHD and actually gets worse with medication probably has a mood disorder such as being bi-polar. The stimulant medication creates that effect. Hope this helps!
My 8 year was thought to have ADHD when he was 4 we started Counseling and since that didnt work we tried meds (which I was totally against until I realized how much my child was suffering and decided it was time to do something about it) We tried med after med and nothing worked for his ADHD to find out he had bi-polar all along! We then started counseling and meds for bi-polar and due to the side effects of the meds we tried for bi-polar we decided to stop. He is doing great now you would never guess he's a bi-polar child. Now my 4 year old has an appointment with his pediatrician to talk about ADHD he has been displaying signs of it both at home and in pre school which in order to be labeled as ADHD it must be present in two seperate enviroments. Again I am hesitant on starting meds but if that is what we have to resort to I will do whatever my son will benifit from. I have done my homework on these many child behavioral diagnoses ADHD, ADD, ODD, OCD, Bi-polar, Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, and Sensory Disfunction so if I can help any of you I would be glad to share what I know! And to say that these Diagnoses do not exist is beyond real. These problems were around long ago the children were just labeled as "Bad" or came from "Bad parenting" it's neither of these. Believe me there is a huge difference between "bad parenting" and caring for your child enough to know that something is not right. My son's doctor told me something that I will remember forever! "If you start to think that the problems your child is showing is due to something you did wrong then you know it's not. This is just you placing the blame on yourself because you dont want to believe that something is wrong with your child" This is when you need to seek the help your child needs"! Good luck to you all you parents out there going through this! It does seem like a never ending battle but get it under control now and I promise there will be a light up ahead soon!
Natalie:
My daughter is now 13 years old and has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. It has been a long road, but initially she was too diagnosed with ADHD and put on Adderall. Eventually after being on Adderall for some time and the disorder rearinf its nasty head, as puberty set in, she became violent and destructive. I suggest that you talk to her doctor about taking her off the ritalin and getting a referral to see a psychitrist ASAP. The sooner she gets some help (if she does have a mood disorder) the easier it will be for everyone involved.
Natalie,
My son did not start on ritalin until he was 12 years old, but we did not see any of the reactions that you are describing. Instead, he became much calmer.
I would contact your doctor right away to discuss this with them. You want to let them know about being violent and destructive. It is important that your doctor know this information.
Please let me know how it works out.
