I went to my counseling appt. today and when I went in I brought the questionnaire that my psychiatrist used to diagnose me and its results.  She looked them over and said as long as the meds aren't making me feel worse, we'll roll with it. She said that since the psychiatrist and her are working towards the same goal (my mental well-being), there is no reason for her to doubt his diagnosis. She told me she prefers to get to know someone before diagnosing them but different people have different styles. She's started working with me on some of the ADHD stuff today. We talked about how it is going to effect my educational pursuits and what I need to do to overcome the challenges that ADHD poses.

Hey Alice,

Whew, so glad you've got that behind you now. Someday I hope to go back to school. I'm so happy for you. This is exciting!

Okay, I can't resist...here's a must have book written by and for college students who have ADD or learning disabilities available new and used: Learning Outside the Lines: Two Ivy League Students With Learning Disabilities and ADHD Give You the Tools by Jonathan Mooney and David Cole. You can read the 40+ reviews on www.amazon.com or on your favorite online bookseller's website.

Even my 20 year old son liked this book.

Big sigh of relief for Alice!!!  This is great, your Tdoc and Pdoc working together to help YOU.  I'm so happy for you all that tension is in the past.  Now you will be working in the present and towards the future.

It is great that both your doctor and your counselor will be communicating with each other. I am sure their cooperation will greatly help your ability to improve many areas of you life and I am looking forward to hearing about your journey.

Congrats Alice!! At least everyone is on the same page now!!

There was a really good article here by Terry Matlen written about being an advocate when you have ADHD. I am sure there are some points you can use in your communications with your tdoc and pdoc. The article in full is here but this is my favorite inspiration: "Go with your strengths and value your authenticity. Celebrate your differences and find those who also appreciate you for who you are, not whom you think you should be."

Good luck Alice and stay in touch and let us know how you are doing!
