Let's start by saying that food choices can certainly impact health in a variety of ways.  Choose to eat a diet exclusively filled with processed foods, fast foods and soda and it's likely that diabetes and heart disease may come calling some day.  Choose to eat a diet high in grilled, well...

Has there ever been any food or diet studies conducted using adults with ADHD? Having had ADHD for over fifty years, I have noticed that after consuming certain foods, I have had mood swings. Since I have always had ADHD, I don't know how things feel or are without it. I don't have a point of reference. Does any one else with ADHD know what I mean? It is hard for me to contemplate on how I would view life or in how my life may have had been different with out ADHD. I am interested in finding out more about diet and ADHD.

I am not aware of any "adult testing" but in response to your personal observations - I would suggest that if motivated,  you could try removing typical "instigators" like full sugar sodas, foods processed with alot of sugar, preservatives and colorings and also the foods you personally suspect as being agents of "mood swings."  It can be challenging, but if some of your issues are caused by foods, it would be really helpful and even healing to find the ones that might be giving you some challenge.

In order to really find the "problematic foods' you need to remove them and be off them for a period of time and then re-introduce them one by one and see if you can find some common  ingredients.

HI THERE,

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT SPECIFICS BUT WITH MY ADD/ADHD MY DIET & MOODS ARE BEST IN A DIET SIMILAR TO THE SOUTH BEACH ASPECT OF EATING.....LOTS OF GREEN & COLORFUL VEGGIES....FISH  MEATS CHIX. PORK  ETC.. PLUS SUPPLEMENTS RICH IN THE B VITAMINS.  IT JUST MAKES MY THINKING SEEM CLEARER AND I FEEL LESS DISTRACTED TOO!!

I am sure many people with ADD/ADHD have some success finding the personalized eating plan that works for them though there are probably some shared features that work for many (like watching processed sugars and food colorings/preservatives).  That's great that this particular eating plan helps you.

You can find information about the Feingold diet at the website of its support group www.feingold.org

Honestly, the Drinking Man's Diet is more scientifically accurate than the Feingold Diet.  Tomatoes and peppers are rich in antioxidants, while most of the temperate-zone fruits are also nutritious.  Any diet that advises against fibrous, vitamin rich fruits like cherries, apples, pears, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, kiwi and others are important for overall health.  Some that contain vitamin C and citric acid shouldn't be eaten within two hours, because they can ruin absorption and effectiveness of ADD meds like Adderall, Dexedrine and Concerta.

Synthetic dyes, fragrances, aspirin and preservatives are basically common sense things that all people should avoid, though cherries have a natural occurring pain killing and anti-inflammatory properties(basically aspirin that's ten times stronger.)
