When I first read your post I was somewhat taken aback by the ad, but like you I am not sure whether it is good or bad.  I certainly believe that awareness is a good thing and it certainly catches your attention and makes you think about the struggles someone with autism will face. And as they say, negative publicity is still publicity.

On the other hand, does it make people view autism in a bad light, instead of showing that people with autism are able to live satisfying lives.

I still am not sure how I feel. Part of me is appalled and part of me believes that all publicity is good.

Eileen,

It looks to me like it did more harm than good, judging by the reactions I've read on various online boards. It makes me wonder how much of this was to bring awareness vs promote the clinic.

I think the campaign failed to raise awareness about misdiagnosed children, although it probably increased attention on the NYU Child Education Center. The way to encourage earlier diagnosis is through pre-schools and kindergartens, and pediatrician questions at 2 year, 3 year, 4 year checkups.

JLS,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree! But how do we teach the pediatricians to know what to look for? My experience is that few even know how to- or have time to- do an ADD evaluation.
