My guess is that the title of this piece drew you in because you're the type of person, probably one with the "hyperactive/impulsive" component to your brand of ADHD, who is apt to jump into an activity, project or life experience that has been dangerous to you in the past. Perhaps you took someone u...

What an important topic to discuss. Impulsiveness can cause problems but can also add spontaneity and variety to life. Being able to jump into something and take risks can lead to many wonderful things as well as many problems.

Terry, all right who have you been talking to about me? I am glad I don't have paranoia along with my ADHD otherwise I would say you were writing a biography of my life. You are so right in this article. I bought a house one day when I was 24 years old. It was a dark, dreary spring morning, it was raining and I was bored. On impulse I stopped at a realtor's office, that I didn't even know, walked in and asked if they had any apartment houses listed.....before I knew it, I had went out looked at a 3 unit, did I say that I didn't own any rental property and didn't need any, made an offer and ended up buying a house that afternoon. I am now 55 and have lived an adventurous, some what crazy life. I have made many poor choices and bad decisions over my life time that I am not happy or proud of but I have also made a few good ones. :)

For any one who is younger and is reading this article that Terry wrote, please take her advice. I know from experience how hard it is not to act when that hyper/impulsiveness hits. It is so hard to tell yourself to wait 24 hours before you tell that jerk off that just cut in front of you, or tell the boss what you really think of his latest business plan that he is so proud of, or come home from work and unload on your spouse or children because you are stressed to the max because you have too many irons in the fire, nothing is getting completed and you feel the whole world crashing down around you and not even driving down a back road screaming at the top of your lungs is calming your racing brain down. I love many things about my ADHD, but I am afraid that much of my life the ADHD controlled me, not me controlling it.

For any young person with ADHD reading this or even any adult that has just been diagnosed with ADHD please see a professional and get the proper type of medicine that will work for your symptoms. There are many cool things that we with ADHD can do that others can't but remember we live in a society where the majority are not ADHD, they don't understand us and most don't even want to try. ADHD or not, we still are responsible and accountable for our actions. As Terry is writing, we must control the ADHD and not let it control us.

Thank you Terry for writing this piece.

I am 50 and this tpo is my life.  I have also done a bunch of crazy impulsive stuff.  Sometimes it works out well and sometimes not:).  I think over all my ADD has served me well and has provided me with a pretty exciting life (I am 51).  However, the shopping thing is a little over the top.  You walked into a realtor and I went careening into the Ford dealership when I was mad at the lender on my car and decided to trade my car in.  I drove out of there in a brand new Mustang convertable from the showroom floor, with a 5 year lease.  The worst of it was I did not trade my car in.  Instead I told myself I would just sell my SUV.  NOT! I took on another $500 dollar car payment and insurance ($350/mo).  Bad move I was car broke for 5 years.  A mustang is not a practical car for me and I turned it in with 3000 miles on it.

Omigosh!  I did almost the same thing.  I love big, red, noisy sports cars.  Three years ago I bought a Torch Red 2001 Z06 with beautiful hand-painted graphics on the sides.  People made favorable compliments about it and took pictures.  I loved the attention.  For some unknown reason, I started looking at cars again.  Three weeks ago I impulsively traded my Z06 in on a newer Mustang that doesn't have half the accessories the Z06 has but I traded anyway.  Three weeks later I'm wanting my Z06 back.  So, without my husband's knowledge, I made an on-line deal with the dealership to trade the Mustang in on my Z06 (plus $3,500).  My husband says he wants nothing to do with my "deal" and will never ride in the Z06 again if I decide to go ahead and buy it back.  Is there a medication I can take that will stop this impulse car-buying problem I have?
