You know, about 10 years ago I read a great book by Dr. Jane M. Healy called, "Failure To Connect: How Computers Affect Our Children's Minds, For Better And Worse" and part of it was about how our kids are becoming unable to socialize. This book was looking specifically at the effects of computers on...

Diane, I do agree w/u on some of the things pertaining to video games.  i have a now 10 yr. old son who has ADHD & ODD, who absolutley loves to play my brother's play station 2 & of the games my brother has is Grand Theft Auto, he has I think about 3 or 4 of those games.  My son's favorite games to play on my brother's ps2 is Grand Theft Auto (San Andreas), my son tells me that he just likes to drive around & shoot at the people & run them over when he can.  my son doesn't get to play it very often, but when he does he knows & understands that it's just a game & u can't do these types of things out in the real world, cause u will get arrested & go to jail/prison.  My son also has a gameboy (one from when they 1st came out) that one of my friends gave him, cause he used to annoy her when we went somewhere in the van I used to have, he only has one game for it & it's a Pokemon Game.  My son will sit & play his gameboy as long as I will let him cause it does keep his hands occupied since he does have the ADHD & ODD.  My son also likes to do other things as well he likes to build things w/lego's, k'nex & I recently taught him how to use a needle & do plastic canvas type things (no real projects yet, he's just a beginer) & he really enjoys doing the plastic canvas, which totally surprised me.  My son also does like to go outside & play so he's not one of theses types of kids who only has to play a ps2 or gameboy to not be bored, cause sometimes after awhile he tells me that he's bored of playing either one of them & wants to do something else or watch cartoons (I do limit the amount of time that he's allowed to watch cartoons).  But I do agree w/u on the fact that most kids now a days between the ages of 9-17 (who are not in a sport or club of some sort) are all into only playing games such as Grand Theft Auto, text messaging & other types of things like these, but I do know for a fact that my son's not totally into playing these types of games & he doesn't have a cell phone yet either cause w/his ADHD & ODD he not responsible enough to have one & to take care of it like u should, he may get one w/in the next 3-4 yrs from now depending on how responsible he gets between now & then.  I hope this gave some insight on your sharepost on this topic, it really is something that I believe does need to be adressed more in home by parents (no matter who/how your family is made up or how your parents are), at school & out in public as well.  Thanks for the SharePost Diane, Heather & Kaleb (Kaleb is my sons name).
