Hi Everyone, sorry it's been a while since I last left a SharePost, we have been doing good & we had a good X-Mas & New Year's.  I have been having some issues w/the school in the way they disciplined my son a couple wks ago, so I told Brian (our counselor/psychologist that we see) about what had happened & he's now going to be contacting his teacher & finding out why he was disciplined that way.  I told Brian what my son did & how he was disciplined & he agrees w/me that it was too much & that it should of only been the one day (the day the incident happened cause it happened b4 school started that day).  Basically my son got a 3 day in-school suspension for a very minor thing compared to what another student did to his classmate (the other student was in 1st grade), but our school has a zero tolerence policy for physically hurting another stundent/teacher/volunteer no matter what grade level the student is in.  The other student had bit another one of his classmates & all he got was he couldn't watch a movie his class was watching & he left a bite mark on the little girl.  My son purposely dropped his backpack over a balcony & it accidently hit someone when it fell & my son got a 3 day in-school suspension for that & cause he didn't get all his school work done on that Friday of the incident he had to sit in the office again on the following Monday & then since he still didn't get all the work done on Monday he had to sit in the Spec. Ed classroom on Tuesday & that was the end of the draw for me & I called Brian that day when my son got home from school (I was home already cause I left work early that day) & then Brian called me back & we kept the appt. that was setup for my son this last Tues. cause we had discussed @ my appt earlier this month about cancelling my sons appt., my son didn't go to his appt. cause then Brian & I could get more accomplished w/out Kaleb being there.  Brian will be calling my son's teacher again 2morrow cause she didn't receive the release form yet by last Friday & she couldn't say much to him about the incident or Kalebs behavior @ school, so he had his office resend the release form so that he could speak w/her 2morrow & his office was to contact him when the school got the release form on Friday.  I then will have to have a meeting w/my son's teachers about how he needs to be disciplined & what actions need to be taken for certain behaviors cause this school doesn't really know how to deal w/a child such as mine & depending on how all this plays out & goes will depend on whether or not I transfer my son to a different elementary school here in Monroe, but we (Brian & I) are going to give the school he's @ now a chance to change things & if they don't then I will be transferring my son to the other elementary school we I think he would be better off.  But since I don't have a vehicle @ this present time we are going to try & work something out w/the school he goes to now cause the other school's on the other side of town.  If this doesn't work out by the time I file my taxes here w/in the next couple of wks & find a vehicle once I get my taxes back then I will be transferring my son, so the school he goes to now has about a mnth or 2 to change the way they deal w/my sons behaviors @ school that are not acceptable @ school.  Work's going okay so far for me even though I still hate it, cause I am getting bored w/it cause it's to much repetition & I am not used to that I am used to moving around & doing different things thru out the work day not the same thing over & over again everyday of work.  There's no other place here in Monroe that would give me the flexibility & the hours that I have @ my present job cause if there was I would have already applied for it.  Wll I hope everyone's doing good & I hope to do another SharePost sooner than I did this time.  Take Care --- Heather & Kaleb

I'm sorry to hear that the school has treated ur son so unfairly. I hope it's able to resoloved. schools should be trained on how to handle issuse like that. no matter if they have had a child like that. I think ur right i think it was to much. yeah he may have dropped his packpack and it acctendely hit someone but giving him 3days is to much. it's not like he started a fight or anything. i hope ur counsler is able to help u and ur son. they must be informed on how to handle it the next time. good luck and keep us posted. hugs

Heather

It is good to hear from you again and I am glad you had a good holiday. Your story about your son reminds me of a time when my son was in high school. He did something (I don't even remember what) and was given a one day in school suspension. During the suspension he needed to sit still, complete work and he was not allowed to speak with anyone else, even during lunch period.

Needless to say, he wasn't able to make it through the day being still and so another day was added, and then another. On the third day I went in to talk with the principal and addressed the issue that it was too much to ask a student with hyperactivity to sit still for 8 hours per day. We could have gone on adding days to his in school suspension indefinately if days were added for not sitting still.

The principal, luckily, agreed and had him taken out of the in school suspension and put back into class. The next time I updated his Section 504, I asked for discipline other than 8 hours of sitting still.

It sounds as if your counselor agrees and maybe you can have discipline information added when you update his IEP for next year.

You seem to be right on this one and have taken care of it quickly.

Let us know how it all works out.

thanks for the comments jennifer & thorn & u as well eileen,

it ended up that i took my sons appt, w/the counselor to discuss what i should do about this issue cause he knows as well as i do that i could of shot my mouth off to the school but on this occasion i knew i couldn't so i talked w/him instead.  my son didn't come to the appt. cause w/situations like this the counselor & i can get more accomplished in a shorter amount of time w/out my son being at the appt.  he did end up talking w/his teacher & a resolution was made (but not the same one as w/ur son eileen) but i will be putting that into his iep b4 next school year cuz my sons iep is done in january & we had just did the meeting about 1-2 wks b4 the incident w/my son took place, i am hoping to impliment it 2 the begining of the school year next year but if i have my way he won't be going back to that school, he'll most likely be going to the other grade school in my town that i want him at right now but the counselor said to hold off on that for now & try what he had discussed w/my sons teacher.  he was going to discuss it w/me @ my next appt. w/him that was on the 4th of this mnth (we ended up doing a 10-15 minute phone conversation/appt. a day or 2 later) cause the day of my appt. the 4th he had 2 emergency situations that day he had to deal w/that where more important than my appt, i understood where he was comning from & i already knew what we where going to discuss anyways.  so everything has been a whole lot better for my son @ school w/the other kids in the same age range as him & he hasn't gotten into any serious trouble since the incident @ the begining of january.  take care - heather & kaleb
