Ritalin is used to treat Narcolepsy....

By Meggie Wednesday, February 03, 2010

Hi,

I sometimes think about odd things...

I know that Ritalin is used to treat Narcolepsy and also ADD symptoms.  I am not an expert, but I know that Narcolepsy is a sleeping disorder - obviously you can't focus when you are asleep - but with ADD maybe your brain is sort of in a sleep state so you can't focus.  huh?  :o)

Interesting concept. I am not a medical professional and don't know exactly the reasons why Ritalin works to help people with ADHD. For that matter, I don't know if the medical professionals really understand it.

I do know Ritalin has been given to soldiers as far back as World War II to help them stay alert and focused.

Hi Meggie

I didn't know this until you said it and I found information on our site which talks about the use of Ritalin for narcolepsy.   Some medications have multiple uses depending upon what condition you have.  There are some meds that treat Bipolar Disorder, anxiety, and depression, for example.  Some of the drugs used for symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (I have this) are used for narcolepsy or for epilepsy.  So go figure.

Anyways...glad to hear from you.  I see you just wrote another post so I want to read and comment there as well.
