could my son have ADHD?

By worriedmum Monday, July 23, 2007
I have a 13yr old son who is close to being expelled from his school. He cannot handle discipline, and is rude and abusive to teachers, he doesn't seem to be able to concentrate on his school work and even though his teachers say he capable of doing better he doesn't think he can.He is currently undergoing councilling at school and I am waiting for him to see a councillor through our GP.Does this sound like he possibly has ADHD or is he just plain naughty? His teachers think he may suffer from a form of depression as he does always feel like he is being picked on.

A diagnosis of ADHD can't be made based on the information you provided.  This would need to be done by a physician.  Keep checking the site, as I just completed an article on the diagnostic process and that might help you understand what to expect.

There are also a few online screening tests. These are not meant to be used for dianosis but can assist you in determining if you should see your doctor.

Here is a list of online screening tests.

It does sound as if you should contact your doctor and discuss your concerns.  Your son's behavior is affecting his school work and I am sure that your doctor will help you with strategies you can use to help your son.

Hang in there, I know that it is hard and that you just want what is best for your son. I know how you must feel each day, worrying about what is going to happen next.  Taking your son to the doctor would be the best course of action at this time. If he does have depression, that is also treatable.

Good luck and please keep us updated on how everything is going.

Eileen
