By Dr. Ballas, Health Guide Friday, October 03, 2008
For people who are taking stimulants to treat ADHD, insomnia is a real concern.  The medications aren't called "stimulants" accidentally. They do have a powerful ability to arouse a person who is feeling extremely sleepy, and used incorrectly, can cause problems going to sleep at night.&nbs...

I have adult ADHD as well as bipolar type I.  All my life I suffered from severe insomnia until I was properly diagnosed at age 41.  I never related the fact that I was so deprived of sleep, that it was affecting my quality of life along with the other untreated disorders.  Now that I have been properly diagnosed, I still have the challenges of getting enough sleep, but it is much easier to TRY knowing that there is a reason for it... I will probably always have to take medication, not just to sleep, but to function.  But it is a relief to know it isn't just in my "head", and that there is help.  I have a dual diagnoses for substance abuse disorder, but this I do not worry about. i have been clean and sober over three years, and when I take my medication it is for the right reason and not to try to "self-medicate".

I am 48 yrs. old and have just recently started on generic Adderal XR (10 mg) for ADHD.  I have suffered for years with untreated ADHD and sleep problems. I am amazed to find that the medication is actually helping me to sleep soundly, and with a significant reduction in the number of awakenings throughout the night!  This is an additional benefit of the meds which I totally did not expect!
