One of the questions I wonder about as a parent is whether or not symptoms of ADHD ever just go away as a child matures. In other words, is it possible for a child to grow out of ADHD? In order to answer this question we are going to call upon some experts to provide their professional perspective on...

What a great question and thanks so much to our experts for answering this. I know a lot of adults and parents wonder about this. In my experience of talking with so many people dealing with adhd, both adults and parents of children with ADHD, I would have to agree with the experts. People don't "grow out" of ADHD, the symptoms may evolve somewhat, hyperactivity can change from endless energy to a feeling of restlessness or being fidgety, but it is still there, making adults that dealt with hyperactivity in their youth look for jobs that have at least some level of movement throughout the day. Many adults with ADHD also tell me they get bored easily, this might be the inattention, the moving from one activity to another, as adults their attention might last a bit longer, sometimes because their sense of responsibility has forced them to pay attention, but it still causes feelings of being stuck and restless when they have to pay attention for long periods of time.
So I think, based on my conversations, that symptoms can change somewhat but they are still there.
I previously wrote a post, How ADHD Symptoms Manifest in Adults, that addresses some of this.
