I have a bit of a love hate relationship with Halloween.  I love seeing all the kids in costumes, and all the lighted pumpkins glowing from porches and stoops and the feel of the cool autumn air.  But the one thing I don't love about Halloween is that it usually a trigger for my son's hyper...

Dear Merely Me, I completely agree with what you have written.  Refined sugars, in my unscientific opinion, definitely make hyperactivity worse.

My totally-in-denial husband who is ADHD is grossly obese and a problem drinker.  Both of his parents (dead, due to obesity related diseases, no big surprise there) did nothing but scream at each other and stuff their faces with sweets and crap.  Their two oldest children got the hell out of the house as soon as they could.  My husband, the family's youngest, learned to self-medicate his pain by overeating, intimidating his friends just as Daddy intimidated him, and then discovering binge drinking and pot smoking in college.  All of these things lead to loading the body with simple, refined sugars.  He is like an addict when it comes to food.  Halloween and Christmas are the two holidays I abhor because of their concentration on eating junk and all of the work they dump on women, while the men sit on their derrieres and bark out orders.  Thank you for your insight.

    Hi Kathleen!

It is good to hear from you.  I think a lot of people would agree with you about the sugar intake.  There just isn't any health benefits to eating a bunch of sugar and there certainly are a lot of health problems related to binging on it.  The holidays can be such a tough time for this reason.

So does your husband do anything for his ADHD or has it been mostly untreated?  Would love to hear more of your story...please share here any time.

Thank you so much for your comment.
