I survived my childhood with any dignity at all in school by being funny. Kids are more and more angry, and suicidal today because we teach in a way where only some will succeed, while the rest will fail. The school climate, and physical environment are still the same. Teachers having vision cannot seem to make the differencein the minds of the public. One way is not the only way to teach. We still put kids in rows, facing a board, whether it is black, or green , or white, or a high tech smart board dictating information to these precious kids , the way they did 4000 years ago, even though we know people will learn better under more creative,an exploratory atmosphere. We still, expect each to learn, and process information in the same way as the "quote"smart kids. .I was the object of ridicule for never being able to do what the perfect kids could do. I loved learning. Everyone in my family had a college degree, except my dad. He suffered tremendously from abuse during his school years. I am my dad. I am my husband. I know that now. Thank God, for those two men. Once a child is humiliated for not being able to learn in this manner, repeatedly, even though they can do a billion, remarkable, visionary, life saving, joy building experiences for someone else,maybe even the world, that feeling of inferiority is there for good.Tremendous behavioral ideas by someone who did not have to live in this body, and deal with this unmedicated brain, will never understand how it feels to have our judgment, our movements, our fully wired vision held captive by someone who has that remote, and refuses to quit changing the stations.That is what it feels like. I processed information differently when I did see it. So why do we keep teaching the same way? The same kids are successful. And, the same kids struggle. I love people. I loved to learn. But, I was as surprised as anyone when I knocked something over for the 32nd time. We are the persons with vision. We are the inventors, the scientists, the writers, the creators, the builders, and the only ones who think that there might be another way to do something to make life better for someone else. We have the research to know that many times , a medicine can control these movements so that we can fit in. Maybe the average person should be made to fit in. So much is misunderstood about the brain. We will never know it all. I f we really want the best for kids, then let's give each child the chance. I am still a hot mama at 68 years old. I still work with all kids. Kids still tell me this, "finally, someone understands us". I have quite a story to tell , as each of you will have by the time you will be 68. A lot of it, very painful.And, I am mot through. But, I have to see a heck of a lot more improvement in the way we observe, and help people with differences. This is the 21st century. Haven't we learned anything? Thank you, doctors with vision.
