Hi Tammy,

Thanks for dropping in and sharing your concerns.

It sounds like a number of things are going on with your daughter. First, there is obiviously some miscommunication. It seems you are getting different messages- the teacher says she's doing fine, but the report cards say otherwise.

Here is what I would do:

1. Call the teacher and ask to meet with her. Find out why the report card is not reflecting what she is telling you.

2. You don't mention whether your daughter has ADHD or if you suspect she does. If she does have ADHD and she is struggling in school, ask to talk to the social worker or school psychologist about getting her extra help. If she doesn't have a diagnosis, but you see problems with attention, distractibility, etc., ask them to evaluate your daughter to find out what is going on.

3. If she is already diagnosed, but still having problems, discuss this with her doctor. Perhaps she is not getting adequate treatment for it.

Let us know what happens!

Hi again,

If she has an official diagnosis of ADHD by a health care professional, then there's a good chance that she can get special help at school through either an IEP or a 504 plan.

There are some excellent articles here that can help you step-by-step in getting the help your daughter needs. You can find them in our Education area.

Thanks for your question. I would contact the teacher to set up a meeting. At the meeting you might want to ask for some specific information. Try to find out exactly where your child is having problems. Are they not completing work on time or are they not handing in work. I know my son used to complete homework each night but would lose it or forget it and never hand it in.

The more specific the information you get from the teacher, the more you will be able to help your  child.

An article to help you before you meet with the teacher:

Preparing for School Meetings

Another article that might help you:

I hope this helps. Please let us know how things are going.
