ADHD w/ODD
Heather & Kaleb
Monday, April 13, 2009 at 11:55 AMTammy, hi this Heather, I know exactly what u are going thru w/the ADHD & ODD thing w/your daughter. My son as I had told you b4 has ADHD but about 2-3 mnths ago I had read an article on this website about ODD & everything in the article I could say that's the way my son behaves & acts. I then checked out one of the books that where in the article from my local library the name of the book is Your Defiant Child, 8 Steps to Better Behavior & the authors name is Russell A. Barkley. I also had to look up the book in my libraries linkcat system to get the name of the author of the book, while I was in there it I just looked to see if they had anymore books about defiant children & I found 2 more books & the name of the books & their authors are the following The Learning Differences Sourcebook -- Author's Name Nancy S. Boyles & the 2nd book & author is The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child w/No Pills, w/No Therapy & No Contest of Wills -- Author's Name Allen E. Kazdin. On the 2nd book I gave you I'm just gettting to see what some of the approaches are to it, but I'm not going to stop going to see the Psychologist or the Psychairtrist that prescribes my sons meds, cuz I will not be able to handle my son then w/being a single parent like you are. I also take it one day at a time & if its a bad day then I just hope & pray that the following day is better than the day b4 & that seems to work sometimes. My son also likes to help me bake at times & I do a lot of homemade baking, I at least make homemade cookies once or twice a week & my son will help me out sometimes for a little bit (usually about 15-20 minutes then he's bored). My son also got a Gameboy Advance from one of our family members for X-Mas & she also got him some games to go along w/it (the Gameboy & games where all used) then when I got my taxes back about a mnth ago I bought my son a Nintendo DS & the games that he has for his Gameboy he can also play them in his DS so I didn't have to buy any games right away but over the last 6 wks we have boughten 6 games, 3 of them are educational & the other 3 are fun but non violent games (there's no fighting, guns or anything of that nature in them) & I also bought him a DS Carrier that holds 8 DS Games & it also has room in it for his Gameboy & all of his Gameboy Games & some earplugs that go to an I-Pod but also works for DS's, it also happens to be a backpack type carrier so we take it w/us when we are going to be away from home & doing things in the town we live in. I like to call it my free babysitter sometimes cuz it keeps him occupied while we are gone & we take the cab almost everywhere we go & sometimes it can take the cab 15 minutes or longer to show up & my son's also very impatient which we are trying to work as well. Well Tammy I hope this gives you some ideas on what you can try if you want to & I also hope that you check out the book Your Defiant Child, 8 Steps to Better Behavior, I found that book to be really helpful so far, if you do check out the book from the library & you want a copy of it for yourself amazon.com has the book in paperback for between $13 - $25's. I have the other two books I mentioned on reserve cuz they are checked out already from my local library, the 1st of the other 2 books I mentioned is due back to the library by next Tues. the 21st. Take Care Tammy & Hang in There --- Heather & Kaleb

ADHD/ODD

Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 07:19 PMMy daughter is 8 and has been diagnose with ADHD,but I know she has ODD....she currently take Adderall. Some days it sooo hard for my to function. I'm on antidepressants myself just to handle the stress. It taking a lot of parenting to have a child like this. I give parents alot of credit..remember you're not alone. I use to love going grocery shopping now I hate it. people look at me like "control your kid". You need breaks for yourself....look to family and friends for free babysitting time so you can have some alone time you need it!

Tammy
So good to hear from you again! I am sorry you are having trouble right now.
ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder) can be tough to handle, children are often argumentative and disobedient and emotional fuses are constantly running short, leaving the home feeling more like a battleground than a place of comfort and solace.
I am giving you some links to articles that focus on this issue:
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)

I hope this information helps. Please let me know how it is going.
