My Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) wasn't diagnosed till I was in my late thirties. By that point, as you can imagine, I had developed coping strategies to get me through life, especially at work. So when my doctor asked if I would like to give treatment with medication a shot, althou...

I am a medical doctor in my mid 50's and I was offically diagnosed at 53 and though my childhood was hell until the 3rd or 4th grade because I was always being punished by the nun's for day- dreaming or talking to much in class. As I learned new techniques i later grammar school and high school I used this extra energy to get better grades.I also used this to complete 3 residencies after medical school. I finally openned my own practice when I was 33. Now I am retired due to lymphoma but I was always working. My pain doctor could not stand my tangentail thinking and handed me a extra script 5 mg dexedrine . I fell asleep for 4 hours the first time I took it  and the 2nd day I took 2.5mg I sleep 2-3 hrs but after about two weeks when the dexadrine deplete my norepephrine more and more I was less sleepy. But now I take it once or twice a day 10 mg. There are newer drugs non stimulants drugs that work on some people so you should ask your doctor.

Brian, you found the rights medication and appears things are going good. I was just diagnosed by a therapist who referred me to a psychiatrist. My therapist recommends DEX IR for older people which I guess she was referring to me. I had problems with school and finally dropped out of high school the first quarter of my junior yr but came back my seinor year and did gradguate with my class 73. I know now I had adhd through that time but there was no help and I continued to have problems which included some legal issues. I did make it through college with a degree in social work but knew nothing about adhd until just a couple months ago. I am not sure what my future holds but am ready for the ride and can't wait. I hope your retirment is going good. I have 10 more years to go and hope they will be better than the last 30. take care

Wow! Your comment on uncontrollable eating really got me thinking..... I take antidepressants, and sometimes even as I am eating, I will think, "I don't want this. It doesn't even taste good. Why am I eating it?" But I still had to have it. Now, I don't need this, as I already want to lose weight. Which antidepressant was it?

    Thanks!
