What type of meds are you or your child on for ADHD and what is your experience with that med?

By Angella Sunday, November 08, 2009
My son is on Straterra, it helps but not quiet enough. His adhd consists mostly of impulsivity, agressive attitude, and patients with interaction;as in when I ask him about something like where is your game boy or did you put up your bike? He spases out and sounds something like this.. What?I don't know? It's upstairs, gaa don't you know anything, mama, leave me alone geese! All this in one frantic sentence. My word can't he just say it's upstairs and be done with it. He is so impatient and spastic when you ask him a simple question. Another thing he does is he will flip onto the couch instead of just walking up to it and simply sitting down, my term when he does this is "flippin and floppin". Quit flippin and floppin all over the place, I tell him. And lastly he has trouble in school with talking, comprehension in reading, and forgetting to do/write down homework assignments. Based on these examples I would like to hear from everyone your experience with different meds, especially those who have children who exibit the same type of behavior as my son. And yes I have tried one other med it was the first med we tried it was Vyvance it did not work well at all it made him some what of a zombie but at the same time it made him uncontrollably tap his foot and talk like he was on speed. Once the med wore off he was EXTREMELY mean and grumpy, he yelled at me like some kind of mad man, and he seemed bipolar at all times not just the difference between med working and med wearing off but throughout the entire day. That med soooo did not work for him. So I became scared of stimulant meds and had him put on the only non stimulant, Strattera. Has anyone had this experience with one stimulant then tried a different stimulant with favorable results?? My son just turned 11 and was diagnosed 3 years ago, only because that's when I had him tested. I was in denial and wrote him off as just "hyper" or "high strung". He exibited symptoms even as a baby. His first steps were more like a sprint. He didn't start walking he started running. OMG! I had to chase him every where. His hyperactivity is much improved now. Even when he is off the med in the summer (I take him off during summer break because I feel he should have at least those 2 months to be him selfrather than Mr. ADHD med and he also has a better appetite and less headaches and stomach discomfort) he is able to control his hyperness.

Hey thank you for sharing your experiences here and especially telling us how the different meds worked out.

My son right now is just on Prozac but his hyperactivity is getting a bit out of control so I am ready to have a talk with his neurologist about what we can do.  So I am reading with interest...when other parents discuss medications.  She had suggested Klonopin at one point.  I just don't know.

It is really good when a med works so I am glad you guys found something.

Please keep writing here...I am very interested to hear more of your stories.
