TRICIAM Community Member February 04, 2010
  • HEY I HAVE TWO KIDS. MY SON THE OLDEST IS 6 AND I THINK HE IS ADHD.  HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN VERY HYPER AND RUDE.  LAST YEAR IN PRE-K HIS TEACHER HAD PROBLEMS WITH HIM AND NOW THIS YEAR IN KINDERGARTEN HIS TEACHER IS HAVING PROBLEMS.  HE WANTS TO BE THE TEACHER, TALKS WHEN HE SHOULDN'T, CAN'T SIT STILL, TALKS BACK, AND POUT.  AT HOME HE DOES THE SAME BUT HE LASHES OUT BY SCREAMING OR SLAMS DOORS, STOMPS FEET, THROWS THINGS.  I GOT HIM TESTED ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO WITH HIS DOCTORS AND THEY TOLD ME HE DIDNT THINK HE WAS ADHD.  I WANNA GET A SECOND OPINION.  I REALLY NEED HELP IS JUST DONT LISTEN TO ANYONE.  WE HAVE TO REPEAT OURSELVES OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND STILL DON'T HELP.  I HAVE TRIED REWARD CHARTS, TAKING THINGS AWAY, AND MORE JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO.  PLEASE HELP ME IF YOU CAN.  AND I LIVE IS HORRY, SC IF YOU KNOW ANY GOOD DOCTORS TO TAKE HIM TOO.

Hi, I can tell you from personal experience that getting your son tested and diagnosed properly will feel like an uphill battle but the first place to start is your pediatrician.  Ask  him  if he/she has a great deal of knowledge in the area and if so what kind of testing he recommends ( i.e.testing by a psychologist and followup with a psychiatrist ) or if he does the prescribing of the ADHD meds and follow-up care.  Also, the school counselor can see your son and recommend an apptmt with the school psychiatrist but that can take time.  That can also frustrate you and your family but stick it out so you can get special school district help especially if it is needed as your son gets older.  I am not saying that this is the case but having to pay for some of the interventions out of your own pocket does get very expensive.  Depending on where you live, find out if the pediatrician has any training or has heard of T. Barry Brazelton or Dr. Tim Jordan ( St. Louis Pediatrician trained by Dr. Brazelton ).  My son is 21 and doing well at present.  He started showing signs of ADHD in 3rd grade but had a great teacher so we held off tested until between 4th and 5th grade.  If I can help or answer any more questions e-mail me at pccarol@cablemo.net  In Christ  Carol K

Your primary healthcare provider should refer you to a therapist/phyciatrist who will give you and the teacher a form to fill out.  After you recieve a diagnosis, you go back to your doctor for the prescription and maintainance of medication.  You should also continue to see the therapist for behavior modification so that he can learn how to control himself, and learn methods to self-focus.

DONT let them tell you no.  DONT let them tell you he is too young.  My child exhibited symtems from an extreamly early age, and his primary told me he was too young because he didn't want to deal with all of the paperwork involved. My son suffered through several years of school because I didn't know better. Needless to say, we have a new doctor.

Once you get on the right track, it is really simple.  Just don't let anyone stand in your way.  Your son needs help to be successful in school, and and in life.  And I am sure that you feel the same as I do; I would do ANYTHING in my power to insure my child succedes in life.

      hope this helps.
