HELP NEED SOME INFORMATION

By SEstrada63 Thursday, August 30, 2007

I have a 4 1/2 year old that has been diagnoised. He also was born with a brain tumor. It was removed when he was 11 months old. Sometimes I wonder if that could have been the cause. But I also have a 20 year old with Discalcalia and ADD. I'm having a hard time with my 4 1/2 year olds head start program. He has started to become violent with his peers and his teachers. Spitting, bitting, cursing, kicking. My husband and I are seeing a child therapist, he on medication. But what I thinks he needs the most is Behavioral therapy. My insurance does not cover this. Any suggestions?

Sandra,

I am sorry that you are going through such a difficult time right now.

The symptoms you described: biting, kicking, hitting are not typically ADHD symptoms. You don't indicate who diagnosed your son, but you may want to speak with your therapist about having a psychiatrist do a complete evaluation. Making sure you are treating the correct diagnosis is the first step to setting up a treatment plan that will be effective.

As far as behavioral therapy, maybe your therapist will be able to help you set up a behavioral modification program in your home.

Here is an article explaining Behavior Modification.

In addition, you might want to incorporate some motivational games to help reward positive behaviors. You can find some examples here.

Please let me know how it is going.

Eileen
